Fax may not pick up phone line on a Dell A960 printer.

Fax may not pick up phone line on a Dell A960 printer.
There can be many reasons for this to occur, most of which can be identified and eliminated by first isolating the printer as the only device on the phone line. Some of the reasons for the printer to not answer the phone are:

• If the print device is not set to auto answer.

• If an unpowered answering machine is physically attached to the same phone line.

• If an answering machine is set to answer on a ring earlier then the printer.

• If an answering machine is set to answer on the same number of rings as the printer.

• If a PC with a telephony modem is set to answer earlier then the printer.

• If a PC with a telephony modem is set to answer on the same number of rings as the printer.

Isolate the printer as the only phone device on the phone line
Isolate the printer as the only phone device on the phone line. If the problem goes away, check the phone line for one of the conditions described above.

Unstable fax send/receive operation.

Fax send/receive slows or stalls or disconnects with Dell A960 printer.
This can occur if the customer is connecting the Dell A960 all in one device onto a phone line that is also transmitting ADSL broadband. If there is no filter before the fax modem on the print device, the fax signal is degraded causing unstable fax operation.

Attach an ADSL filter in front of the Telco jack on the printer.
The printer should have an ADSL filter inserted in front of the Telco jack on the printer. This also means that the ADSL modem cannot be plugged in after the printer.
